Writing has been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember: journals, poems, short stories, letters to pen pals. I've always wanted to be a writer, and have always hesitated to actually call myself one. Even when I had a poem published in a little 'zine called Jone's Ave., I think I was barely twenty years old, I still didn't call myself a writer. Even when I got accepted into a selective creative writing class in university, I didn't call myself a writer. And soon after that, I renounced writing forever. It was too hard; I was frustrated with not being immediately successful. I took off to the Yukon, where I continued to not be a writer for ten years.

During those ten years I was, of course, still writing. I still journaled, still wrote letters. I even had a regular birding column in Dawson City's local paper, the Klondike Sun. I had a blog (you can visit it here and some of those entries were downright poetic. But I wasn't a writer.

It's taken having kids and losing myself to motherhood for me to finally claim that title. I hold on to it fiercely now, because it is mine. Over the last year I've worked hard to make writing a priority in my life, because I've finally realized that while it does take discipline and a thick skin, it is absolutely easier for me to write than to not write.

In this blog I muse about parenting and how it intersects with my writing life. I detail the ups and downs of writing and sending work out to be published. I hope you enjoy a peek into this poet mama's life. Don't forget to say hello in the comments!

  1. Hey Tara, I just want you to know that I adore your site and am keeping up after an accidental hiatus, but sometimes I have trouble commenting on blogspot sites, for whatever reason. Just know I'm reading and loving your words.
